Full Dentures, Partial Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures

Full and partial dentures take over smile duties when you are missing one or more natural teeth. Whether decay or injury caused the tooth loss, dentures are cosmetic dentistry options that create vibrant new smiles.

At Michael Skidmore DMD, Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Michael Skidmore works closely with his patients to be sure dentures not only fit properly but look outstanding as well.

When are Full Dentures an Appropriate Solution?

Full dentures replace an entire arch. Patients may need an upper denture, lower denture, or both. A flesh-colored acrylic base covers the gums and roof of the mouth when made to replace the upper teeth. For the lower teeth, the acrylic base is horseshoe-shaped, so it does not interfere with the tongue.

What if I only Need Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are an option when the missing teeth do not allow for a bridge. Metal clasps may be used to grip nearby teeth to anchor the partial in place. For some people, precision attachments offer a less noticeable anchor point than metal clasps. When partial dentures are attached to crowns on the natural teeth, a better fit is usually the result.

How are Implant-Supported Dentures Different?

Implant-supported dentures are the most stable and natural feeling denture choice. Dr. Skidmore fits the proper number of implants into a healthy jaw bone to serve as the anchors for either full or partial dentures. Implant-supported dentures provide relief by virtually eliminating slippage. Patients enjoy a variety of formerly forbidden foods once the implants have fully healed. It is vital that candidates have healthy gums and sufficient jawbone to support the implants.

Continued Care

Patients should follow a proper oral hygiene routine as recommended by the dentist. Brush the gums, tongue, palate and any remaining teeth twice a day, and floss at least once. To ensure the dentures last, it is essential to remove and clean them daily. Keep your regular dental appointment twice a year so your dentist can check on oral health and the continued proper fit of your dentures.

Dr. Skidmore and his team in Temecula focus on fitting dentures that are the proper size, shape, and color for your mouth. Dentures offer health benefits by improving overall oral health and giving people a fresh start. Implant-supported dentures can provide relief from the pain caused by the slippage and irritation caused by ill-fitting dentures.
