Exercise Away Gum Disease

Michael Skidmore, DDS - Temecula Dentist

As your Temecula dental team, protecting the health and beauty of your smile is our top concern. Inflammatory gum disease is the second most common infectious disease among Americans. If not properly treated, gum disease is known to lead to other health concerns such as heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and tooth loss. However, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of gum disease.

Sure, we all know that diet and exercise are good for keeping the heart happy and the extra weight off, but did you also know that studies show both may reduce the risk of gum disease (periodontal disease) as well. According to the American Dental Association, one study found that those who exercise regularly from one to three times per week were up to 1/3 less likely to show signs of gum disease. Those who exercise vigorously three times per week or moderately at least five times per week reduced their chances of developing gum disease by half. These findings were based on a comparison to people who participate in little to no physical activity at all.

Exercise may be the key to fighting gum disease for a couple of different reasons. Exercise increases circulation, reducing inflammation of the body. It also helps regulate blood sugar, and this includes blood sugar that feeds bacteria of the gums.

If you aren’t choosing to hit the gym for your waistline, do it for your overall health and well-being. This includes the health and well-being of your smile.
